Work-Study - Tips for Success
Make the right match
A work-study position is like any other job. Students are expected to show up on time and do the work for which they are paid. It is important to remember that our student workers are students first, but it is also our responsibility to help them develop the skills that are needed in the workplace. The following tips will help make the student work experience positive for all parties involved.
- When selecting a student, it is appropriate to conduct an interview in order to determine if they have the skills and abilities necessary to perform the job.
- It is not a good idea to hire a student if you strongly doubt their ability to perform the job.
- Establish office policies on conduct, behavior, dress code, expectations, etc. on or prior to the student's first day of work.
- When expectations are not met, let the student know immediately and provide information on how they can improve their conduct.
- Provide your students with meaningful work and give them opportunities to grow and develop new skills once they master smaller tasks. This will make them feel more fulfilled with the work they are doing, and they will value the job more.
- When possible, provide projects that may relate to their course of study. This will enhance your students' educational experience and provide valuable experience for their resumes.
