Cooperative Education for Employers

What is Clark State's Co-op Program?
Clark State provides you, the employer, with highly-qualified students who have completed their first year of an associate's degree. The students you hire for Co-op positions will be your employees and under your supervision performing their responsibilities. They are expected to meet your standards of quality, loyalty, attendance, confidentiality and appearance.

Why should our company participate in the Co-op Program?
Employers benefit from the Co-op Program through:

  • access to a diverse pool of highly-qualified, motivated and prescreened employees,
  • reduced recruitment and training time with no advertising or employment agency costs,
  • testing potential employees in your actual workplace,
  • release of your professional staff from routine tasks,
  • temporary help for staffing your seasonal needs and special projects, and
  • an opportunity to give the College input on the preparation of your future employees.

What does it cost me?
You pay the students at your rate for the job they do. Co-op students tend to cost less because they do not yet have their degree. There is also a savings on full-time fringe benefits and recruiting costs. Plus, trained and motivated Co-op students can increase your productivity!

How long would a Co-op student work here?
Co-op students can fill established part-time or temporary full-time positions or handle three to six-month special projects. Most students participate in a parallel pattern of working part-time and going to school part-time. Some Co-op students participate in an alternative pattern of full-time work and full-time study.

Employers with predictable crunch periods may opt for Co-op participation during one or two of our quarters: Fall (September-December), Winter (January-March, Spring (March-June) or Summer (June-August).

How does the process work?
To become a Clark State Co-op employer, simply follow these easy steps:

Step 1
Complete a job description for review by the College. All Co-op positions must meet standards for college-level academic value. Please be specific about job responsibilities, the number of work hours required weekly and the hourly rate of pay.

Step 2
Fax, e-mail or mail the completed job description to the Co-op office (please see below). Once it is reviewed and the appropriate advisor approves it, we will add it to our Co-op job listing.

Step 3
We will send you resumes of appropriate students based on the qualifications you have indicated. You decide which students you would like to interview; you may contact them directly or through the Co-op office.

Step 4
Notify the Co-op office when an offer has been extended. Clark State program professionals will be happy to assist you in developing the work assignment or with any questions you have along the way.

Step 5
Once each quarter, you will be asked to meet with a Co-op representative and complete a confidential evaluation of the student.

Take advantage of a program that has been meeting employment needs in Clark, Champaign, Logan and Greene counties for nearly ten years. We look forward to working with you as a Co-op employer!
